Am I a Runner? Are you?

It’s June 4th.  Happy National Running Day!  Is it crazy that there’s a day dedicated to the physical and mental torture that is running?  Quite probably, yes.

i am a runner

However, when you think about what it means to call yourself a runner, it sort of calls for a celebration.

Runners don’t check the weather to see IF they should run, just what to wear.

Runners schedule their social lives around training schedules.

Runners don’t paint their toenails, they’re just happy if they have all 10.

Runners know that no high beats an endorphin fueled runner’s high.

Runners meet new people and automatically wonder what their training pace is.  How else will they spend time together?

Runners can only enjoy Sunday brunch on the heels of 10+ miles.

Runners are really good at math, as long as their calculating miles per hour or minutes per mile.

Runners have conversations…broken up into… three word sentences…

Runners have an entire drawer devoted to race t’s.

Runners love the feeling of sneaking in a run before the rest of the world wakes up.

Runners will never be truly lost or go missing thanks to all the GPS devices attached to their bodies.

Runners spend more money on shoes than most of us do on computers.

Finally, if you are wondering if you are truly a runner, if that crazy title fits you, there’s only one thing that all runners do, and it’s the only characteristic you need to have in order to join the club…

Runners RUN.  It might be fast.  It might be slow.  It might be on a treadmill.  It might be on a mountain pass.  It might be with a stroller.  It might be for short bursts mixed with walking recovery.  However you do it, if you run, you’re a runner.  Don’t be shy to call yourself one.  Embrace the title.  Own it.  You are a runner.

You may to be a fully fledged member of Crazy-town, yet.  It will come.  As long as you keep putting one foot in front of the other, you will reach a moment when you find yourself craving the run, instead of forcing yourself into it.  You will find that all your disposable income is spent on shoes and race entries.  You will find that your whole weekend is scheduled around your long run.  You will find that you’re up before your alarm clock.  You will find that you have quietly become the athlete you always dreamed of being.  But don’t wait for that feeling before you call yourself a runner.  Make it a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Alright mamas.  My baby just woke up from her nap.  Time to lace up and hit the road.  See you out there.

Peace, Love, and Burpees,

Katy
